DIY Dream Car Key Holder // Fahrzeugschlüsselhalter mit Traumauto für Zwei

[Post sponsored by Volkswagen.]

Just a minute ago they were next to my purse in the corridor, weren’t they? Which jacket did I actually wear yesterday? … Every time you’re in a hurry, the stupid car keys are nowhere to be found – sometimes you can’t believe where you ended up putting them. We will put an end to this key search odyssey! Now, everyone not only gets his dream car, but also finds a safe key parking spot in a self-made mini carport on the wall.

Instructions:

Saw the wooden pieces to the right sizes and sand off the edges. If your model cars are e.g. 5 cm long, your carport should be 7 cm deep. In this case the wood pieces were sawn to the following measurements (length x width):

1x bottom panel 7 x 8 cm
2x side panels 5 x 6.6 cm
1x back panel 5 x 8 cm
1x roof 8 x 9 cm
1x ledge to keep the model cars from rolling 0.7 x 5 cm

(We love upcycling which is why we used the remains of an old organizer made out of plywood. Therefore, our roof has those little squares which we thought would fit perfectly to the carport. Of course, you can also craft a roof with smooth edges even build a pointed roof.)

Anleitung:

Put the pieces together step by step to form a house. Use a little bit of wood glue on the edges and press the pieces together for a few minutes. You should start with the bottom panel and then add the back panel.

The best way to remove extra glue is to use a cloth. In the next step, add the side panels, followed by the roof and finally the ledge.

After all pieces are glued together, let the house dry. You new key holder should look like this:

In the meantime the keyrings can be attached to the model cars. In order to do so, carefully drill a hole with a thin steel drill into the rear bumper. In case the cars are made of plastic, pointed scisscors are sufficient. It’s important to keep the position of the holes in mind: you want the link chains to hang from the sides of the ledge, therefore, one car has to have a keyring on the left and the other one has to have it on the right side!

Look for the best position to attach the jump ring beforehand. In this case, the holes were drilled right beneath the taillight and the jump ring was put through the wheel arch. Now attach the link chain and close the jump ring.

Once you found your keys and the carport key holder is hanging on the wall, you can start parking!
