No matter if meant for a birthday or for Christmas: a voucher is always a good idea and a personally designed pop-up card is a perfect gift. You can use photos to create such a pop-up card and it will be a special surprise when the images pop-up once the card is opened. This card will surely get a special place on the pin board!

Ob Geburtstag oder Weihnachten: Ein Gutschein ist immer eine gute Idee und als persönlich gestaltete Pop-Up-Karte ein perfektes Geschenk. Sie lässt sich super aus Fotos herstellen und beinhaltet eine besondere Überraschung für den Empfänger, wenn sich beim Öffnen einzelne Motive vom Hintergrund abheben. Damit finden sie bestimmt einen Ehrenplatz an der Pinnwand!

Materials & Tools:

• Folded coloured card
• Photos with the images of your choice: a larger photo as background, e.g. a panoramic seaside or aerial view as well as smaller images that match the subject of the voucher
• pointed scissors
• Scalpel or cutter
• Glue stick
• Ruler
• Pencil

Material & Werkzeuge:

• Klappkarte aus Tonkarton
• Fotos mit Wunschmotiv: Ein großes Foto als Hintergrund, z.B. mit Meer- oder Landschaftsansicht sowie kleinere Motive, die zum Thema passen
• spitze Schere
• Skalpell oder Cutter
• Klebestift
• Lineal
• Bleistift

This is how it’s done:

So geht’s:

Cut the larger photo with the background image to the size of the folded card.

Das große Foto mit dem Hintergrundmotiv auf die Größe der Klappkarte zuschneiden.

Fold the bottom third of the photo inwards, so that you have a floor and a background. Use a scalpel and a ruler to slightly score the folding line; this makes it easier to fold the photo.

Das Foto im unteren Drittel nach innen falten, so dass Boden und Hintergrund entstehen. Die Knickstelle vorher mit Skalpell und Lineal ganz leicht anritzen, dann lässt sich das Foto besser falten.

Make sure to cut out the motifs that you want to pop-out as accurately as possible.  

Gewünschte Motive, die herauspoppen sollen, möglichst sauber ausschneiden.

Take the folded background motif and draw on two parallel lines for a bar on which the first object will be fixed. The lines must have exactly the same length; otherwise the bar will be slanted. You should think about where exactly you want to position the objects and how much space you need to the front and to the side, in order for everything to fit.

Das zusammengefaltete Hintergrundfoto zur Hand nehmen und an der Stelle, an der das erste Objekt angebracht werden soll, zwei parallele Linien für einen Steg zeichnen. Die Linien müssen exakt gleich lang sein, sonst wird der Steg schief. Damit später alles passt, sollte man sich vorher überlegen, wo genau was auf die Karte soll und welche Abständen nach vorn und zur Seite beachtet werden müssen.

Score the lines and fold the bar inwards. Since the bar has a right angle, it protrudes as much as it is high. Bars of different size create the illusion of depth: objects will either appear to be more in the front of the image or closer to its background. However, you should keep in mind that if you place an object on a bar that is too big, it will protrude beyond the card when it is folded.

Schneide die Linien ein und drück den Steg nach innen. Da der Steg einen rechten Winkel hat, geht er so weit nach vorne, wie er hoch ist. Durch unterschiedlich große Stege erzeugt man die Illusion von Tiefe – Objekte sind damit entweder weiter vorn im Bild oder näher am Hintergrund. Beachten sollte man dabei jedoch, dass ein Objekt auf einem zu großen Steg über die Karte hinausragt, wenn diese zugeklappt wird.

Fold out the image and glue the cut-out motif to the erect bar.

Klapp das Bild auf und kleb das ausgeschnittene Motiv auf den aufgerichteten Steg.

Another option to create three-dimensionality is to attach little bars. Simply cut a small stripe from the remnants of the photo and fold it into a C.

Eine weitere Methode, mit der man Räumlichkeit erzeugen kann, sind kleine Stege zum Ankleben. Schneide dazu einfach einen kleinen Streifen aus einem Foto-Rest aus und falte diesen zu einem C.

One side is glued to the card, the motif attached to the other.  

Die eine Seite wird auf die Karte geklebt, auf die andere Seite kommt das Motiv.

Finally, glue the background with the pop-up motifs to the card. And that’s it. You’re done!   

Zum Schluss wird nur noch der Hintergrund mit den Pop-Up-Motiven in die Karte geklebt, schon ist die Pop-Up-Karte fertig!
